Hazelnuts, favorite superfood

Hazelnut is the favorite among nuts. Hazel plant thrives in regions with mild and moist winters and mild summers. Common hazel (greybrown hazel, forest hazel, lat. Corylus avellana) grows at the area of Europe and Asia. It is usually a bush like plant that can grow up to a height from 3 to 8 meters but sometimes it can grow up to 15 meters. It's a deciduous plant with rounded leaves covered in small hairs on both sides. The flower grows in very early spring. The fruit grows in small clusters. Every fruit is enclosed in their own shell similar to the rolled in leaf the covers three quarters of the fruit. When it matures, the fruit falls out of the shell, about 7-8 months after pollination.

Sweet and healthy

A 100 g of hazelnuts contains 600 calories. Hazelnuts are rich in monosaturated acids and fibers. They also contain large quantities of minerals copper, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, iron and vitamins E and B. Hazelnuts don't contain any gluten so they are a good choice for preparing meals without gluten. Hazelnut oil is important for hair and skin beauty. It easily absorbs and doesn't leave oily traces making it suitable for oily and acne prone skin. In traditional medicine it's used as a massage oil and as an addition to various moisturizers.

Hazel and its fruit symbolized teaching and the power of healing. So all the sudden inspiration, insight or intuition happened under the magical influence of hazelnuts.
Hazelnut tree was used to make different kinds of sticks – ritual druid sticks, fighting spears in the Middle ages, shepherd sticks or standard walking sticks.
An interesting fact is that hazel was used to make magic wands because it was believed that it's a good convector of occult energy. These kinds of wands were often used in the fight against dark magic. Moreover, hazel is the most common material in making wooden water finding jaws but also as a tool to find hidden treasures and Earth's energy fields.
